Are you getting ready to have an online consultation with Paws4Paws? Great, we’re here to make sure you get the best possible experience!
A great way to get the most out of your consultation is to take good quality videos of your dog and send them to us before your consultation. We would like a video of your dog walking and trotting.
Guidelines for capturing the best videos
To make good quality videos there are a few things we ask you to do:
- Place the camera at chest or torso height of your dog when filming. We recommend that the camera is placed at a distance of 3-5 meters from your pup
- When filming your dog’s walk and trot, ensure that your dog is looking forwards throughout the clip. We do not want them to look up to you (if you are walking next to them) or get distracted by other things in their environment
- If your pup is having trouble staying focused, it might help to have them on a short lead and walk a few steps ahead of them. Do not talk to them whilst you walk with them as this is often a cue for them to look up to you. Without distractions, your pup will be focused solely on their walk and trot rather than focus on you or anything else
- Please clip your lead to a collar or use a slip lead for these videos. No harnesses please!
- Ideally you will purchase an mobile phone tripod such as this one here for capturing your videos; we will also use video in our online consultation and you will need your hands free to work with your dog so a phone tripod will come in very handy
How many video clips?
We ask you to send us a total of 6 clips of your dog:
- Walking towards the camera (to capture their front end)
- Walking away from the camera (to capture their rear end)
- Walking past the camera (to capture their side)
- Trotting towards the camera (to capture their front end)
- Trotting away from the camera (to capture their rear end)
- Trotting past the camera (to capture their side)
In some cases, it may take a few attempts to get the best video but with patience and practice, you will soon have all the footage that we need. Following these instructions will give us the best insight into your pup’s gait and posture, and will allow us to provide the most accurate initial assessment possible.
Here is an example video clip of a dog walking and trotting towards, away and past the camera. Have a look at the dog’s head position (looking straight forward) and how the lead is held. This dog usually wears a harness when going for walks but for the purpose of this video I used a slip lead.
Sending the video files to Paws4Paws
There are several ways you can send the video files to us and we are happy to received them in one of the following ways.
The easiest way to send a video via email is to compress the video file into a ZIP file. If you have a Mac at home, you simply right-click on the file and then select ‘compress [file name]’. If you have a Windows PC, you also right-click on the file, but then select ‘Send to’ > ‘Compressed (zip) folder’. Once you have compressed the video file into a ZIP file, you can attache the ZIP file to an email and send it to sandra@paws4paws.com.au.
If you don’t know how to get the videos onto your computer and would like to send them straight from your phone to us, you can use WhatsApp. You will need to save our phone number in your contacts first (Paws4Paws +61 435 774 688) and then attach the videos to a message to Paws4Paws. Please always include your name, your dog’s name and your email address in the message.
You Tube
You can also upload your videos onto your You Tube channel as an ‘unlisted’ video and then send us the link to the video. Go to You Tube and then click on the three lined hamburger sign. Then click on ‘Your Videos’ > ‘Create’ (top right corner). From here just follow the prompts but make sure you select ‘Not Made for Children’ and ‘Unlisted’ along the way. Once your videos are uploaded, you can copy the link and email it to us.
If you have any questions or concerns about taking videos of your pup, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help you along the way!
