Arthritis In Dogs
In-home rehabilitation to reduce pain, improve mobility, and build strength in dogs with arthritis
Understanding Arthritis in Dogs
Arthritis in dogs—also referred to as degenerative joint disease (DJD)—is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions affecting dogs. While it is most commonly associated with ageing, it can also affect younger dogs, particularly those with a history of joint trauma, surgical intervention, or developmental disorders such as hip or elbow dysplasia.
Arthritis is characterised by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage, leading to joint inflammation, synovial thickening, and osteophyte (bone spur) formation. Over time, this deterioration causes joint pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and altered limb loading. Clinically, affected dogs often show signs such as decreased activity, reluctance to exercise, difficulty rising or navigating stairs, and behavioural changes secondary to chronic discomfort. Left untreated, it can significantly impact mobility, strength, and overall quality of life.

How We Can Help
We use a multimodal approach to support dogs with arthritis and DJD, combining evidence-based techniques to reduce inflammation, improve joint function, and restore comfort.
Our in-home treatments may include:
-
Manual therapy – massage, soft tissue mobilisation, and joint techniques to relieve tension and promote circulation
-
Passive range of motion – to maintain flexibility and ease joint stiffness
-
Photobiomodulation (laser therapy) – non-invasive, pain-relieving treatment to reduce inflammation and support cartilage health
-
Targeted strengthening and balance exercises – to stabilise joints and reduce compensatory strain
-
Environmental recommendations – guidance on home adjustments to reduce slips, strain, and flare-ups
- Home Exercise Program – we tailor a home exercise program to help maintain and improve your dog’s strength, flexibility, and stability between appointments.

Results You Can Expect
While arthritis and degenerative joint disease are chronic and progressive conditions, in-home rehabilitation can significantly improve your dog’s daily comfort, physical function, and emotional wellbeing. With consistent, targeted therapy, you can expect:
✅ Reduced Pain and Inflammation
Manual techniques, gentle joint mobilisation, and laser therapy help reduce inflammation in and around the joints, decreasing pain and discomfort without reliance on medications alone.
✅ Improved Joint Mobility and Flexibility
Stiff joints respond well to passive range of motion work, soft tissue release, and stretching, allowing your dog to move more freely and with less hesitation or stiffness — especially after rest.
✅ Slowed Progression of Joint Degeneration
While arthritis can’t be reversed, consistent therapy can help preserve cartilage function, reduce compensatory strain, and support joint stability — which may delay further deterioration.
✅ Enhanced Muscle Strength and Balance
Targeted exercises help maintain muscle mass, which is essential for joint support. Stronger muscles reduce joint loading, improve posture, and help prevent secondary injuries.
✅ Increased Activity and Confidence
As mobility improves and pain decreases, many dogs show a renewed willingness to go for walks, play, or move about the house — often with more ease and independence.
✅ Better Quality of Life
Less pain, more movement, and better emotional wellbeing mean your dog can enjoy their day-to-day life with more comfort, engagement, and dignity.
